Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.  All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. JAY R. HEAD
Jay R. Head died at his home in Elmira February 8, after a long illness. He was the son of John and Fanny Francis Head. He was a graduate of Toronto Veterinary College. He married Ada Atwell Bookmiller, April 15, 1932, who survives. He is also survived by one step-son, Atwell Bookmiller; grandchildren Maurice and Margaret Bookmiller; aunts, Mrs. Emma Auble, Mrs. Rose Porter, of Elmira; Mrs. Maude Budesheim, of Middlesex, VT. Funeral was held from the home, Rev. Henry White, officiating; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.

HEALY - HART, PATRICIA HEALY
Age 90, of W. Clinton St. Elmira, NY died on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at Schuyler Hospital Montour Falls, NY. Patricia was born in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone on April 29, 1918, the daughter of the late Lt. John and Katherine (O'Leary) Healy. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Stephen Hart, in 1987; son, Charles Hart, in 1989; and grandson, David Hart Tallman, in 1975; sons-in-law, Patrick Cannon and James Milloway. Patricia was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Boston, MA and Emerson College in Boston, Class of 1940. It was at Emerson that she met her husband and they were married August 9, 1941, and came to Elmira where together they raised five children. Patricia was a retired elementary teacher having taught at Our Lady of Lourdes School Elmira, from 1960-1969 and Watkins Glen School from 1969-1986. She was an active member of Newcomer's Club, Symphonia Club, Elmira Little Theatre and Thursday Morning Musicals. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Soaring Museum, a docent at the Arnot Art Museum and RSVP Volunteer at Booth School. Patricia is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Vincente D'Ingianni of Keuka Lake, Priscilla and David Tallman of Painted Post, NY, Trina Cannon Milloway of Gainesville, TX; son, Jonathan Hart of Rochester, NY. Her greatest joy was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Vincente (Jamie) D'Ingianni, Trina End, Bryan Cannon, Timothy (Carla) Cannon, Chandra Tallman, and Aaron Tallman; Merrick, McKayla, and Arianna D'Ingianni, Emily and Michael End; Aidan and Kaden Cannon. Special thanks to her caregivers, Cathy Rarick, Dawn and Stacey Stevens. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorials to Meals on Wheels or Southern Tier Hospice. Friends may call at the BAKER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME on Tuesday, July 1, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church Elmira on Wednesday, July 2, at 9:30 a.m. Rev. HEATER, WILLIAM E.  age 70, formerly of Horseheads, NY.  He was born July 16, 1933 in Elmira, son of the late Austin and Margaret (Barber) Heater and died on Friday, April 23, 2004 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility.  He is survived by his sister, Joan Monachino of Horseheads; brother, Jack Heater of Howard, NY; nieces, Cindy (Tim) Barber of Westmoreland, TN, and Lisa Monachino of Horseheads; great-niece and nephews, Stephanie, Jacob and Mark Stanbro, all of Horseheads, and Matthew Heater of Westmoreland, TN.  Bill was a  member of the 7th Day Adventist Church.  He loved music, riding his bike and he loved animals, especially his doings.  Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Sunday, April 25th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  His funeral and committal services will be held there on Monday, April 26th at 2 p.m. Rev. Roger Curtis will officiate.  Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of his family.

HECKMAN - A Beloved Elmira Lady Called to Her Reward Last Week. In the death of his beloved wife, Hattie J. HECKMAN Rockwell, on Monday morning last, Hon. H. H. Rockwell is assured of the deep and sincere sympathy of the entire community, insufficient as it may be to dispel the dark shadow which has settled over his happy home life. Seldom does the city lose a lady of more beautiful character, consistent piety and charity and kindly and lovable personality than Mrs. Rockwell. Since removing to this city, thmrty-two years ago,she has constantly endeared herself to her many friends whom she made and whose death will be mourned as will that of few ladies in our community. Mrs. Rockwell was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abram B. Heckman and was born in the town of Lansing, Tompkins county, February 17, 1841. Her parents later removed to Angelica, Allegany county, and in 1863 she came to Elmira with her sister, the late Mrs. Jackson Richardson. In September, 1871, she was married to Major Rockwell. There were three children born to them, only one of whom, Rena, is left with her father, to mourn the irreparable loss which has come up on them. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. D. Davenport, of Paw Paw, IL, and Mrs. William T. Riley, of Hailey, ID. For the past three years Mrs. Rockwell has been suffering with a chronic disease, but bore her sufferings with Christian faith and gentle resignation. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock at her late home, No. 364 West Clinton street, Rev. Thomas K. Beecher officiating. The interment, which was in Woodlawn, was private.

FRANCIS R. HEDGES age 67, of Old Lowman Rd., Wellsburg, N.Y. Monday, February 8, 1971.  Friends may call at the Page-Jamieson Funeral Home, Wellsburg, N.Y. Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  Funeral and committal services there Wednesday at 2 p.m. Rev. HELLER, Clyde D. Age 69 of Country Rest Home, Erin, N.Y., Wednesday, June 11, 1975 at his home. Funeral service Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Olthof Funeral Home, with no prior calling hours. Burial Woodlawn Cemetery. Survived by brother-in-law, James Beck of Elmira; cousins, Ernestine Keefe and Augusta Parfitt both of Elmira.   Unfortunately, I don’t know who makes James Beck the brother-in-law of Clyde. Clyde’s parents were Samuel W. and Mary E. Heller, and his uncle was Chester Grant Heller, through whom Ernestine and Augusta were his cousins. I am trying to find out more about his grandparents, Samuel W. Heller and Carrie Bridenbaker, who came from Scranton, PA.  Jamie Parfitt

HELLER - KREISLER, Doris H.

Was born April 2, 1929 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of the late Harry G. and Bertha C. (Chamberlain) Heller, died peacefully on Sunday, November 4, 2007, at the Chemung County Nursing Facility at the age of 78. Her brother, Raymond Heller, predeceased her. Doris married Wilbur D. "Bill" Kreisler, September 25, 1949 in Elmira at the Southport Presbyterian Church. They have enjoyed 58 wonderful years of life and love together. She is survived by her loving husband, "Bill"; beloved sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Nancy Kreisler of Elmira, NY, Edward and Jill Kreisler, also of Elmira, NY, Douglas and Jennifer Kreisler of Jordan, NY; much loved grandchildren, Joseph (Kristeena) Kreisler, Mickey (Pam) Kreisler, Daniel and Craig Kreisler, Eric and MacKenzie Kreisler, Bethanie and Natalie Emerick; adored great-great-grandchildren, Derek and Kayla Kreisler, Madilyn Kreisler; sister-in-law, Betty Heller of Manlius, NY; brother-in-law, Donald (Marian) Kreisler of Bradenton, FL; along with several special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Doris was devoted to her family and home and loved her grandkids dearly. HENBEST Robert L. Major (USAF Retired)
Loving Father & Grandfather - Age 86, formerly of Roricks Glen Parkway, Elmira, NY, died
on Saturday, February 13, 2010. Son of the late Edmund J. and Helen M. (Yost) Henbest was born August 25, 1923. Bob is survived by his sons, William (Cynthia) Henbest and Theodore (Suzanne) Henbest; daughters, Judith (James) Bayer and Jacqueline Henbest, all of Elmira, NY; grandchildren, Danielle, Sarah and Will Henbest, Heather, Teddy and Megan Henbest, Christopher and Matthew Bayer. Bob was predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Grace Rowley; grandson, Jeremy Bayer; brothers, Harold, Edmund, Leonard and Fred; sister, Emily Watts. Bob retired in 1988 after 47 years as President/Treasurer of Henbest & Morissey, Inc. He also retired from the Board of Directors of Elmira Savings Bank in 1988. Bob was a graduate of Elmira Free Academy with business honors. He attended Lycoming College and Wharton Business School. Bob served in WWII as a lead bombardier in the Army Air Corps flying missions out of Italy in Southern Europe. He received many awards including two Presidential citations, the Distinguished Flying Cross, five Air Medals and four Battle Stars in the European/Mediterranean Theatre. Bob also served as Commander of the 9313th VART Squadron and as Deputy Adjutant of the 9062nd VART Reserve Group. After the war, Bob was sent to Chatham Field, Savannah, GA, where he served as Bombardier Instructor on B-29's, Deputy Base Adjutant and Officer Club Manager. Bob retired from the Air Force as Major after serving 22 years both Active and Reserve Time. Bob joined his father in the Insurance business beginning Henbest & Son. After his father's death two years later, Bob became president of the company and throughout the years acquired 23 competing insurance businesses. Bob loved volunteering at the Office for the Aging, Arnot Ogden Medical Center, R.S.V.P., Red Cross Blood Drives, The National Warplane Museum and the National Soaring Museum. Bob also enjoyed being involved with The Collings Foundation. He was a member of the Elmira Heights American Legion, Retired Officers Association and past Trustee of the North Presbyterian Church. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport, NY on Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 11:00 to 12:00 (noon). A Memorial Service honoring Bob's life will follow the visitation at noon. The Reverend Gary Chorpenning will celebrate the services for his friend. Interment will follow in the National Overlook section in the Woodlawn Cemetery where the Chemung County Honors Squad will accord Major Henbest Military Honors. Bessie HENDERSON, the little five-months-old daughter of C. H. Henderson, the veteran soldier, who fell from a load of hay and was killed a couple of weeks ago, died at the home of Mrs. Meeker, on East Market street, Monday. The remains were buried in Woodlawn the following day.
 

 

HENSON Dorothy H. Seely

Was born August 20, 1917 in Sayre, PA, the daughter of the late Hurley and Juliette (Smith) Henson, died  peacefully on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility at the age of 94. Her first husband, LaRue Seely, second husband, James Wrisley, and brother, Carl Henson, predeceased her. She is survived by her children, Richard (Catherine) Seely of Horseheads, NY; Roslyn Lawrence of Horseheads, NY; Gary Seely of Elmira, NY; David Seely of Cape Coral, FL; along with 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Mary Henson two nieces and one nephew. For many years, Dorothy worked with her husband LaRue at L. W. Seely and Son Taylors as a seamstress. Upon retirement they settled in Sarasota, FL where they enjoyed many wonderful years together. In her earlier years she belonged to the couples club at the former Centenary United Methodist Church. Dorothy was an avid bingo player as well. Family and friends are invited to call at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira/Southport, NY on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Virginia M. A private family service took place Wednesday afternoon, September 26, 2001 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY with the Reverend William Lutz officiating. Virginia was formerly of Elmira, NY and most recently of Washington DC where she died Saturday, September 22, 2001 at the age of 100. She was a past production manager for the Florist and Nursery Exchange in New York City and an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution with ancestors dating back to the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, George Abbott. Virginia is survived by her two nieces, Delha Barwick and Elizabeth Flagg and their families.
 

 

HERRIMAN John T. Herriman

Age 68, of Elmira, NY, died Sunday, May 8, 2011 at his home. John was born on August 3, 1942, son of Willis and Mary (Jankowski) Herriman. John retired from Portville Central School in Olean, NY, after many years of service as a French teacher. He loved animals, especially his cats, Zeb and Zach. John is survived by his brother, Ed (Ellen) Herriman; nieces, Kristina (William) Thomas, Mary Simons and Brenda (Paul) Morris; nephews, Scott (Jodi) Herriman and Michael Simons. John was predeceased by his father, Willis, mother and step father, Mary and Harold Brown, sister, Barbara Simons, brother, Richard Herriman. Age 101 of Elmira, NY. She was born August 25, 1909 and died
Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank (Hank) on February 15, 1965; daughter, Linda Carl on October 1, 1999; Linda's husband, Stanley Carl on October 24, 1999; son-in-law, Monroe W. Swezey on November 19, 2001. Alveretta is survived by her daughters, Barbara Swezey, Marie (Richard) Pinelli; son, Norris (Shirley) Bridgeman; grandchildren, Janet (John) Dean, Nancy (Dale) Powers, Pamela Pinelli, Kim (Tom) Ryan and Norris Carl; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Dean, Robyn and Andy Bebel, Merissa and Tommy Ryan, Norris Carl and Austin Baltheiser. HEWITT Adeline (Hewitt) Worner

Age 100 of Elmira. died peacefully surrounded by her family at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. Adeline was born in Blossburg, PA February the 10th, 1913. She is the daughter of the late James and Maryanne "Mame" (Butcher) Hewitt Sr. She is also predeceased by her husband Willard Worner and daughter Sharon Cantliffe. Surviving are her loving grandchildren: Terri (Bill) Seymour of Elmira, Denise (Mark) Ross of Campbell, Garry Cantliffe and Chad West of Pine City; great grandchildren: Ryan Michael Seymour, Ryan Matthew Cantliffe, and Aarika Seymour all of Elmira, Carly, and Jacob Ross of Campbell; great great grandchildren: Alexis and Aubree Cantliffe of Elmira and son in law: Garry Cantliffe Sr. of Pine City along with several nieces and nephews. Adeline was the last of nine children in her family. Many knew her as the cashier and host at Pierce's Restaurant; she also worked at the switchboard at Elmira College for many years. She was a devoted member of Park Church and a proud Yankee Fan. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 Pennsylvania Avenue, Elmira, NY Sunday, October 27, 2013 from 12:00PM to 2:00PM. Funeral services celebrating Adeline's life will follow her gathering at 2:00PM by dear friend and Pastor Skip Reed. HIGGINBOTHAM Erma Fay Schlick

Was born September 23, 1925 in Charleston, WV the daughter of the late Jesse and Blanche (McGrew) Higginbotham. She went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 86. Her brothers, James, Robert, and Ray, and sister Marie preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Lewis E. Schlick; daughter, Glori (Charles) Cole of Sunbury, PA; son, Thomas Schlick of Vestal, NY; grandchildren, Jeannette (Paul) Brosious, Julie (Jason) Fikkert, Jodi Cole and Jeff Cole; great grandchildren, Emmalyn, Paul and Curtis Brosious; Megan and Justin Fikkert; sister, Florence Marsh. Fay enjoyed her family, church and her oil painting art work. Family and friends are invited to call at the Maple Avenue Baptist Church 1548 Maple Ave. Elmira, NY on Friday, March 2, 2012 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. MR. ALFRED G. HILBERT age 83 of W. First St., Elmira, NY, Monday, September 2, 1991 at Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital.  He is survived by his wife, Margaret (Waples) Hilbert; son, Edward C. Hilbert of Newark, NY; son & daughter-in-law, Richard & Donna Hilbert of Castleton, NY; grandchildren, Sandra, David and Kimberly Hilbert; niece, Helen (Milton) Peterson of Corning, NY; nephew, William (Lorraine) Hilbert of Haddonfield, NJ, Alfred was predeceased by his brothers, Otto and William Hilbert.  He was an employee of New York State Electric & Gas Company and a member of their Speaker’s Club, attended North Presbyterian Church, volunteer for the Chemung County Historical Society since 1973, volunteer for the Clemens Center and Meals on Wheels, Historian for the Town of Elmira, member of Ivy Lodge #397 F&AM and Corning Consistory, member of the Relaxed Squares & the Twin Tier Squares and an avid gardener.  Friends are invited to attend a memorial service, Sat., September 7, 1991 at 3:00 PM at North Presbyterian Church, 921 College Ave., Elmira.  Rev. Age 88 of Elmira, NY. He was born September 9, 1920 in Warren, PA, son of the late Richard and Mary Hildum, and died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Louise (Willison) (Blair) Hildum; son, Michael Blair of Lawrenceville, PA; granddaughters, Jennifer Dunkelberger of Battle Creek, MI and Kelly Blair of Elkland, PA; great-grandchildren, Laura and Marie Dunkelberger, Zackary Blair and Dakota Cox; sister-in-law, Evelyn Cronin of Horseheads; niece, Jackie Cronin of New York City. Norm retired as Superintendent of Woodlawn Cemetery. He was a life member of the Elmira Lodge #95, F. & A.M.; member of the Elmira Elks, Sons of the American Legion, Post 154 Elmira Heights; Montour Fall Moose Club and the F.O.E. Elmira. Family and friends are invited to his funeral service at Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira, on Wednesday, May 27th, at 9 a.m. Rev. CHARLES T. HILL, late of 1221 Lake Street died at the family home early Sunday morning, Oct. 27, 1935.  He is survived by his widow and a son, Harry F. Hill of Binghamton.  Mr. Hill was a retired passenger conductor on the DL&W Railroad and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Conductors.  The body is in the Wilson Funeral Home and will be removed late this afternoon to the family home.  The funeral will be held in the family home Wednesday at 2 p.m.  The Rev. HILL JoAnn
Services celebrating JoAnn's life were held Monday, April 24, 2006. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church with Father Walter Wainwright presiding. Bryon Hill and Brenda Crosby placed the funeral pall on their mother's casket with JoAnn's husband John E. Hill placing the cross. Grandchildren, Brittany and Matthew Crosby gave the readings with Father Wainwright reading the gospel and delivering the homily. Matthew Crosby also led the prayers of the faithful. Grandchildren, Brittany and Sarah Jo Crosby, Molly and Kelsey Hill presented the offertory gifts. Molly and Sarah Jo read a poem about their grandmother. Ray Hill, JoAnn's brother-in-law, shared remarks of remembrance. Music was led by organist Mary Montanarella and soloist Sue Amisano. Upon leaving the church, bagpiper Chris Sullivan played "Amazing Grace" Committal prayers and interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bryon Hill, Matthew Crosby, son-in-law Brett Crosby, and nephew Mark Hill. After the interment a luncheon was held at the McCabe Parish Center.
 

 

HILL Marilyn June Levack

Age 87 of Elmira, NY died on Sunday August 21, 2011. She was born in Elmira, NY on May 6, 1933 the daughter of the late Marvin and Mildred Kinner Hill. Marilyn was a retired school bus aide for the for the Elmira School District bus garage. She enjoyed painting and watching old movies. Mrs. Levack was pre-deceased by her husband Carlton "Link" Levack of 40 years on November 16, 1997. She was also pre-deceased her brothers and sister: Barbara Gaughan, Wade Hill, and Nolan Hill. Mrs. Levack is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law: Marvin and Sandy Levack of Richland, NY; Delos Levack of Elmira, NY; George and Nancy Levack of Elmira, NY; Scott and Lisa Levack of Elmira, NY; daughters and sons-in-law: Danielle and Gary Kriel of Montour Falls, NY; Marylynn and Jim Farrer of Horseheads, NY; 17 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; sister: Yvonne Strait of Millport, NY; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Donald and Rosie Levack, Jim Gaughan and Shirley Hill; several nieces, nephews and a host of caring friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 318 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY on Thursday August 25, 2011 from 1-3 and 6-8 PM. Age 78, formerly of Elmira, NY, died Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center, in Albany, NY. Phyllis was born in Elmira, NY, daughter of the late Richard and Thelma (Tucker) Hill. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Elston of Schenectady, NY, along with her sisters and grandchildren. It was Phyllis's wish that services would not be held for her. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Grace was a member of the Jackson Summit Baptist Church, she worked for the Remington Rand for many years until they closed. HINSMAN - Death of Amanda M. Hinsman. Last Tuesday at 2 p. m., at her father's home near South Creek, Amanda M., daughter of H. E. Hinsman, aged eighteen years and seven months. Amanda Hinsman leaves father, mother, two brothers and four sisters to mourn her departure. Father, brothers and sisters deeply mourn their great loss, yet the sorrow and agony of her of her aged mother, as she bends over the remains of her lifeless daughter, is sure to melt the hardest heart and move ............back to the .....when a fond mother's watchful love was ever ready to administer to our every need. For nearly two years the deceased lived with Mrs. Lackey, her sister, at 626 Lewis street, and made many personal friends, who mourn her death in the prime of lovely girlhood. First taken with that terrible disease, diptheria, gladdening the hearts of her friends by recovering from that dreadful scourge; afterwards to die with heart failure. All that medical skill could do, aided by watchful care and gentle nursing, night and day, was gladly done to stay the ebb of her young life, to Woodlawn her body rests, freed from the trial of this life. We cannot call her back, but we can go hence to her, thank Christ.

Grandma Jeannie cherished all of her grandchildren. Calling hours will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at the Maurer Funeral Home, with a service to follow at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home, 300 Second St., Liverpool.
