It is nice to be honored here tonight as the 50 year class. Years ago
we saw the 50-year classes and our perspective was quite different than
it is tonight!
We have had a great time together today and now I want to tell you about
"The Class of 1950"……….the Half Century Class.
-
We started with 37 members in 1947.
-
We finished with 29 graduates in 1950.
-
Currently there are 20 living.
-
Attending tonight are 18 members.
-
We have produced 84 children. This has produced 87 grandchildren and 5
great grandchildren—of which 5 are mine!
-
All members of the class worked in the Nursing profession sometime or other
during the past 50 years.
-
Three of us produced daughters who entered the Nursing profession.
-
Two members have served in the Armed Forces.
-
Two members chose school nursing as their specialty.
-
Several members held positions as "head nurse" and "supervisor".
-
One member has her Doctorate in Education (Pat Shine Hoff), plus 4 others
earned their BS.
-
One member serves as a Director of Nursing.
-
Four chose Occupational Health as their specialty.
-
We have one Nurse Practitioner among us.
-
There are 2 members still employed. One is part time and one full time.
-
One member was selected to be in "Who’s Who in American Nursing" (Esther
Watson).
-
Several of the class has worked in doctor’s offices and hospital specialties
such as Neo-Natal and L & D.
In 1950, I started working for $1.20 per hour; and after passing the State
Boards, the rate jumped to $1.50 per hour in the OR. Some members started
at $1.00 per hour for general floor nursing. I paid $9.00 per week for
room and board the first year after I graduated. Social Security withholding
for nurses did not start until June of 1951.
There was no pension program available at the Arnot Ogden until one
had worked 5 years of continuous employment. I am a Historian so let me
tell you how different the world was in 1950.
-
The average income was $3216.
-
A new car cost $1511—average. I bought one and paid a whopping $1860.
-
A new house cost about $8450.
-
A loaf of bread was $.14.
-
A gallon of gas was $.18.
-
A gallon of milk was $.84.
-
An electric range cost $240.
-
The Dow Jones average was 216.
-
Life expectancy was 68.2 years. The Class of 1950 was going to change that!!
-
Credit cards were born this year.
-
Music for 1950 was: Good Night Irene, Music, Music, Music and Mona Lisa.
-
In the World Series the Yanks were champions, of course!
-
The Korean Conflict, as it was called, started in June of 1950.
-
One piece windshields were offered only by Cadillac, and
-
RCA made a 3-color TV picture tube for the first time ever.
This sums up how it was when we graduated. It has been a great time to
have been involved in American medicine. We all feel very privileged in
many ways and especially to be here tonight.
Quote of the Month:

of it."—Lord Chesterfield.
