Joyce,
The class picture was dated as June 1938. The one-room school
where these kids attended was/is located near Greatsinger's Corner, near
the intersection of Breesport-North Chemung Rd and Lowman Rd. According
to my Aunt, Alice (Olin) Doan, who lives in Chemung, the school building
still stands today and is a residence. I remember my dad, before
he passed, pointing it out to me a couple of times as we were visiting
my mom's gravesite, a short distance away in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
My father, Floyd Olin, graduated from this grammar school two years
later, in 1940. Attached is a Graduation Program, which is titled:
?Rural School Graduation?, so perhaps included multiple schools.
The Program was dated June 21, 1940, and was held at the North Chemung
Union Church, located at the center of North Chemung, just north of the
intersection of Breesport-North Chemung Rd and Federal Rd, on the west
side of Breesport-North Chemung Rd. You can note in the Program that
my father, Floyd, played a guitar selection at the ceremony. I have
attached an undated photograph of my father playing his guitar. While
undated, I can tell that it was taken at about this same timeframe.
I believe the picture was likely taken at the 'studio' of his instructor,
as I also have the group photograph attached. Unfortunately, none
of the others are identified. Perhaps someone will recognize a relative.
Regards
Gary Olin
