This Historical Marker on Route 20 in Waterloo NY commemorates the founding
of Memorial Day in this village 05 MAY 1866. Originally to commemorate the
Civil War dead, and then expanded to all military dead, the holiday has evolved
as a time to decorated the graves of all deceased family members.
