Age 93, of Glenview, IL, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009, in Evanston, IL. Beloved daughter of the late John and Esther Cronin. Fond cousin of Carole McManus of Binghamton, NY, Daniel McManus of Rochester, NY, John McManus of Tarzana, CA, William McManus of Vestal, NY, Anne Shelley of Charlotte, NC and Mary Kurey of Green Valley, AZ. MISS JOSIE CROWE died at the home of her sister, Mrs. William O’Connell in Brooklyn, Saturday (Sept. 22, 1900) after an illness of several months.  The remains were brought to this city yesterday.  Hughes & Sullivan will be in charge of the funeral, which will be held from the home of her brother, Thomas Crowe, No. 715 Delaware Street this morning at 8:30 o’clock and from St. Mary’s Church at 9 o’clock.  Interment will be in SS. CROWLEY John J., Jr. "Jack"

Elmira: Age 88, died peacefully on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Chemung County Nursing Facility after a brief illness. Jack was born in Elmira on December 1, 1922 the son of John J. and Anna (Bochnewick) Crowley. Jack is predeceased by beloved sisters, Regina L. Corsi and Patricia Ann Dailey and brother-in-law Val Christofaro. He is survived by his beloved sister Mary E. "Betty" Christofaro; brother-in-law John (Mary Margaret) Corsi of Elmira, Bruce Dailey of Millerton PA; nieces and nephews, Cindy (Mark) Collins of Glenmont NY, Mickey (Cynthia Evans) Corsi of Trumansburg NY, Daniel (Christa) Corsi of Charlotte NC, David (Michelle) Corsi of Webster NY, Rick (Brenda) Christofaro, Kathy (Dewey) Booth, Betsy (Patrick) Morrisey all of Elmira, Colleen (Lynn) Friends of Millerton PA, Ann (Gary) Grechanik of Malverne NY, and Susan (John) Friel of Rockville MD; along with numerous great nieces, great nephews; and longtime friend Steve Schulman.  Jack was a U S Army Air Corps veteran serving for 5 years. He enlisted before Pearl Harbor and served in Europe during WW II. He was a long time employee of the Star Gazette, where he was a linotype machine operator. Jack coached both CYO basketball and baseball at Our Lady of Lourdes Church and St. Patrick's Church for over 30 years, teaching many young men the skills of the sports he loved. In honor of his dedication to Elmira sports, Jack was inducted into the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame. A devout Catholic, he had an unwavering devotion to the Blessed Mother. Jack was a daily communicant at mass, sang in the choir at Lourdes and assisted as an altar server when needed. Jack helped out with the morning packing crew with the Arctic League for over 20 years and also volunteered for 10 years at the Chemung County Nursing Facility. He was a member of the Elmira Council #229, Knights of Columbus, and a charter member, and first sentinel, with the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Msgr. John J. Lee Division. As everyone in Elmira knows, Jack was the consummate Boston Red Sox fan.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 25, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Military honors will be accorded outside church after mass. Family and friends are invited to the Ancient Order of Hibernians, 701 Kinyon St. from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25th. Age 67 of Horseheads, NY died on Sunday January 3, 2010. Tom was born on February 14, 1942 in Elmira, NY the son of the late Donald C. and Mary F. Johnson Crowley. He was a retired Letter Carrier and Supervisor for the U.S. Post Office in Elmira, NY. Mr. Crowley was pre-deceased by his daughter Karen Crowley in 1967 and his step-daughter Kelley Burroughs in 1999. Tom is survived by his wife Joan M. CROWN Earl F. "Froggy"
Age 89, of Elmira, NY, died Sunday, August 2, 2009, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Earl was born on July 15, 1920 in Endicott, NY, son of the late Paul and Georgia (Smith) Crown. Earl served our country honorably in the United States Army during WWII. He retired from Thatcher Glass in Elmira Heights, after many years as a supervisor. He was a member of the American Legion Post #154 for fifty-two years and a lifetime member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church. Earl was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite (Kissell) Crown in 1991; son, Thomas Crown; and daughter, Linda Crown. Earl is survived by his loving children, Richard (Bunny) Crown of Elmira Heights, Kathleen Crown of Elmira and Sharon Butler of Old Hickory, TN; six grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; special friends, Melissa McNamara and the Frantellizzi family. Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday, August 5, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. CRUISE William Charles "Bill"
Of Elmira, NY was ushered home to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, February 4, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born June 21, 1938 in Elmira, son of the late Thomas and Esther (Willett) Cruise. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his son, Brian; brother, Robert; and father-in-law, Francis Conklin. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Judith; and his children: son, Kevin (Sara) with children, Kristen, Andrew, Natalie, Kendall and Nolan; daughter, Shelly (Tom) Hill with children, Molly, Maureen, Nicole, Greg and Alex; daughter, Cassie (Todd) Steadman with children, Jonathan, Josh, Brittany, Morgan, Seth, Alaina, Taryn and Caelin; son, Jake (Jen) with son, Ayden; brothers, George (Jean), Earl (Phyllis); sisters, Caroline (Paul) Labosky and Jane Brown; mother-in-law, Ruth Conklin; special in-laws, Helen (James) Sullivan, Pat French, David (Pat) Conklin, Linda Roblyer; and a very loving and close extended family. Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Red Stone Ballistic Missile System as a sergeant. He retired in 2000 from the Elmira Correctional Facility after 25 years as a vocational instructor. He was very involved in all of his children's and grandchildren's sports and extracurricular activities. Bill was an avid bowler and golfer, and enjoyed many outings with his father-in-law Fran, as well as many other friends and family. He was a talented carpenter and home remodeler, and over the years, helped many family and friends with their home remodeling projects. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Thursday, February 7th from 4 to 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held there on Friday, February 8th at 11 a.m. Rev. Age 48. She was born September 10, 1963 in Elmira, daughter of Jonathan and Margaret (Crowley) Cuer and died Friday, August 31, 2012 at Elderwoods Nursing Home, Waverly, NY after an extended illness. She was predeceased by her father Jonathan and brother Terry Cuer. Janice is survived by her mother Margaret Cuer of Wellsburg; sister Joanne (Kevin) Eldridge of Newfield; brother Bernie (Deborah) Cuer of Elmira along with several nieces and nephews. CUNNINGHAM Joseph P.

Age 55, of Horseheads, NY, died very unexpectedly on Sunday, October 21, 2012, at home. He was predeceased by his parents, Hugh and Helen Cunningham and sister, Shirley Brookens. Joe is survived by the love of his life and soul mate Judy Briem, with whom he resided. He is also survived by brothers, Alan and Hugh Cunningham; sisters, Dianne Cunningham and Rita (Congdon) (Joe) Dennison; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Joe retired from the Elmira Correctional Facility after 21 years of service. His passions were snowmobiling, working endless hours on his yard and going to casinos, but most recently he realized how much he loved cruises. Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, October 25th, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. at the James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place there on Friday, October 26th, at 12 p.m. with Deacon Allen Pacette officiating. CUNNINGHAM -CALLAHAN (nee CUNNINGHAM) Mrs. Julia Cassin
Mrs. Julia Cassin died at her residence on Powell street yesterday morning after an illness of two weeks.  The deceased was a resident of Elmira for the past forty years.  She was a true Christian woman possessed of warm religious spirit and noble character that endeared her to a host of friends who will hear of her death with sincere regret.  The funeral services will be held Sunday at 8:30 a.m. from the residence corner Franklin and Powell street and from St. Mary's church at 9 a.m. where solemn requiem mass will be sung. The deceased leaves one brother, John Callahan the well known merchant, and one sister, Miss Kate Callahan.Elmira Advertiser, Saturday August 24, 1895, p. 7. (Note from submitter, Ellen -  I think she was born "CUNNINGHAM,"  then her father died and her mother remarried a CALLAHAN.  In 1850, she's listed as CUNNINGHAM, but in 1860 as CALLAHAN.  Probably not formally adopted, but these are the names that were used.

CUNNINGHAM Patrick Frances, Jr. Age 77, died Tuesday, October 18, 2005, at Regional Hosptial in Jackson, TN. He was born in Elmira, NY, son of the late Patrick Frances, Sr. and Ella Safford. Mr. Cunningham was retired from Elmira College, with 40 years of service. Mr. Cunningham moved to Jackson to make his home in 2001. He was loved by family and friends. Mr. Cunningham was married to Virginia Terpersonius Cunningham in 1955. She preceded him in death in 1961. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Cunningham, Jackson, TN; a granddaughter, Stacey Burleigh of Jackson; two great-grandchildren, Robert and Kaitlyn Burleigh; a stepson, Ronald Polhamus; a stepdaughter, Roberta Knapp; one sister, Mrs. Eileen Willoughby of Matthews, NC. A graveside service for Patrick will be held on Tuesday, June 13, at 10:00 at St. Peter & Paul Cememtery, Father Farrell, St. Mary's Church, officiating. Any friends or family are welcome to attend the service.

CURRAN Reverend Joseph F., S.J.
Priest/Teacher - Died on September 3, 2009 in the Jesuit Infirmary at St. Louis University as a result of complications from a stroke suffered the previous week. He was predeceased by his parents, Florance A. and Helen M. Curran. His family includes sister Joan C. Powell, brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Thomas R. and Barbara Curran; 10 nieces and nephews; plus twenty grand nieces and grand nephews. Fr. Curran was born in Elmira on February 7, 1924. He graduated from St. Mary's School and Elmira Catholic High School. In 1943 he entered the Jesuit Seminary at Wernersville, PA. After 4 years he moved to West Baden, IN where he studied philosophy for 3 years. As a scholastic, Fr. Curran taught at Georgetown, St. Joseph's and Loyola Prep Schools. For 4 years he attended Weston Theological Seminary in Massachusetts where he earned his Licentiate in Theology. Fr. Curran was ordained in Boston by Cardinal Richard Cushing in June 1956 and said his first Mass at St. Patrick's Church in Elmira. He earned a Masters Degree in History from Loyola University in Chicago. He studied at Strasburg University in France and at Louvaine University in Belgium where he earned his PhD in Political Science writing on the European Council. For a year Fr. Curran worked at the headquarters for the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. While in Europe he did the English language broadcast on Vatican Radio for a year. He taught Theology and Political Science at Wheeling College in West Virginia and Concordia College in Montreal, Canada. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church, Elmira on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. Interment in the family plot at St. Peter & Paul's Cemetery will follow.   Published in Star-Gazette on September 10, 2009

CURRAN - SEKELLA, Mary Catherine Curran
Age 93 of Elmira, NY. died Friday, July 10, 2009. Born January 19, 1916, Mary Catherine went to Elmira High School, then on to Elmira College for her Bachelors and Masters degrees. Although she began her teaching career in Elmira Heights, she was a French teacher at Elmira Free Academy for 32 years. She received the Outstanding Educator award from the Star-Gazette for her lifetime dedication of educating children. Following her retirement from EFA, Mary Catherine taught French and Spanish to her two granddaughters at St. Patrick's and Holy Family Junior High. Mary Catherine was the daughter of Anna T. McElligott and Thomas E. Curran. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Youston Sekella, the son of Matthew and Julia Sekella of Elmira Heights. Her siblings, Anne, Alice and Tom Curran, all departed well before her. She is survived by two sons, T. Curran Sekella (Barbara) and Matthew E. Sekella (Micki); four grandchildren, J. Bradford (Dawn), Jason (Heather), Jennifer and Jillian Sekella. She has five great-grandchildren, Carrick Palmer, Alisha Zibolis, Maggie May, Natassje and Ekaterina Sekella. Mary Catherine also had a hand in the lives of her nieces and nephews - Thomas Curran and Debbie Curran of San Francisco (dec.), Brendan Curran of Maine, and Sheila and Courtney DiPaola of Minnesota. Mary Catherine was a long-time volunteer for the Red Cross and Friends of the Library. She was a devout Catholic and counted as her churches Our Lady of Lourdes, Mt. Savior Monastery, and St. Mary's. In her honor, there will be a reception at the Ancient Order of Hibernians at 701 Kinyon Street, on Monday, July 13th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Her funeral mass will be at Our Lady of Lourdes on Tuesday, July 14th at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. JAMES CURRY, late of 712 Kinyon Street died unexpectedly Tuesday night, June 4, 1935 as the result of an automobile accident.  He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Lynch and Mrs. Francis Golden of Elmira; a son, William of New York City; two sisters, Mrs. Edward M. Shaffer of Elmira, Mrs. Frank LeFeur of Binghamton; 10 grandchildren.  Mr. Curry was a member of the B. of L. E. and the Pennsylvania Railroad Honor Roll.  The funeral will be held at the family home Friday at 8 a.m. and in the St. Mary Church at 9 o’clock.  Burial in the SS. FRANCIS J. ‘BUD’ CUSICK age 55 of Elmira, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family.  Bud was born November 15, 1937 a son of Dr. William J. and Doris Conboy Cusick.  In addition to his parents, Bud is predeceased by his brother, Daniel C. Cusick.  He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Molly Quigley Cusick, son, Kevin W. Cusick with daughter Ashley of Hammondsport, NY; daughter, Kelly L. Cusick of Atlanta, GA; Sister, Dee Hayes Overton of Elmira; twin brother, William J. Cusick with wife Diane of Elmira; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Timothy R. and Dianne Quigley of Dahlonega, GA and Sean P. and Denise Quigley of Castile, NY; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws and many good friends.  Bud was a Marine Corps veteran attaining the rank of Corporal.  He was a member of the first graduating class at Corning Community College.  Bud then continued his education at St. Bonaventure University where he earned his BA degree.  He was retired from the Bendix Corp. where he was the Director of Finance.  After retiring from Bendix, Bud enjoyed teaching at the Elmira Psychiatric Center.  Before moving to Elmira, Bud lived in Big Flats where he was very involved with the Big Flats Community Days, serving as co-chairman on several occasions.  For several years he was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels.  Bud was a member of the E.J. Brewer Marine Corps League, the American Legion Bentley Post #443 and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Msgr. John J.
