Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.

Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Artist's fans pay homage to a life

For Talitha Botsford, conversation was currency, and there was a wealth of it flowing Sunday at The Park Church in Elmira. About 50 friends, neighbors, relatives and former colleagues gathered at the church to pay tribute to Botsford, a prolific musician, published poet and self-taught artist who lived alone but was never lonely.  Botsford died on Jan. 30, less than five months after celebrating her 100th birthday. Her multitude of talents and her zest for life were vividly recalled Sunday by people who said it was an honor to know her.
"Talitha and I had the pleasure of playing many jobs together. I knew her since I moved to Elmira in 1931," said longtime local musician and Knapp Music Store owner Don Hartman. "She was the most talented person I ever met. She was an inspiration to all of us. She never complained. I was always inspired after visiting her."
Botsford lived by herself in the West Church Street home her father built by hand in 1917. But she was rarely alone, enjoying a steady stream of visitors, a testament to her popularity. They were attracted in part by her wide-ranging artistic talents, her witty conversation and a love of life that always left them feeling uplifted.
"She was spunky, energetic. She wrote verses every day until a couple days before she died," said neighbor Faith Gray. "She was sharp as a tack. She remembered everything. She had a personality and a great laugh. Everybody loved her."
At Sunday's service were three tables set up to display some of Botsford's memories, including numerous newspaper articles about her and her work, many of the myriad sketches and drawings she produced over the years, and photographs from her last five birthday celebrations.Among the people who were on hand for the celebration was a relative who barely knew her, but wishes he had."My regret from hearing all this is not knowing her well," said Botsford's grand-nephew Lynn Hunt of St. Louis, Mo., who moved away from the Elmira area when he was only 5. "I'm hearing such unbelievable things. I only had the opportunity in 1973 to visit her for a day."If he had gotten to know Botsford better, Hunt would have known a woman who had a positive influence on everyone around her, said the Rev. Arthur C. "Skip" Reed Jr., co-pastor of The Park Church."We always had a better sense that she was taking care of us rather than us taking care of her," Reed said. "She said yes to life her whole life. And when it came time, she had the courage to say yes, it was time to die."

A HORRIBLE TRAGEDY
A Schuyler County Farmer Kills His Only Child AND THEN COMMITS SUICIDE
The Man Supposed to Have Committed the Deeds During a Fit of Insanity – A Tragedy Unparalleled in That Section
Special to the Gazette
Cayuta, N. Y., March 4 – The most horrible tragedy that ever occurred in this section of the state was committed yesterday about a mile and a half north of Alpine village and four miles north of this place.  Gould Cogswell, a farmer residing with his second wife and a daughter by his first wife, came into the house and told his wife that he had decided to put his daughter out of the way.  No sooner had he made the statement than he grabbed up a revolver and going into the room, where his daughter who was an invalid lay, shot her dead.  His wife, paralyzed with fear and excitement, was powerless to prevent the commission of the horrible crime.  After shooting his daughter Cogswell went out into the barn and securing a rope climbed upon a high beam.  He tied one end of the rope around his neck and the other around the beam.  To make the job complete he then placed the revolver, with which he had killed his daughter, to his head and shot himself, at the same time jumping off the beam.  Death was instantaneous in each case.   No motive for the crime can be conceived, the general impression being that Cogswell’s mind had become unbalanced.  He was about 50 years old and his about 20.  He owned a farm on Oak Hill, and last summer built a store which he afterwards sold.  He was worth about $6,000.

Later Particulars.
(Special Dispatch to the Gazette.)
Watkins, N. Y., March 4. – Cogswell’s wife and another daughter, Mrs. Roe of Townsend, were in the sitting room when he took a revolver from a shelf and said he was going to shoot a cat.   Shortly after, two shots were heard, and upon stepping into the kitchen they found his daughter lying on the floor.  He was just going out the back door.  The unfortunate young woman was dead when discovered, have been shot through the heart and head.  As soon as possible they started after Cogswell and, upon entering the barn, they found that he had gotten upon a wagon and put his head through a slip noose and then shot himself through the head and fell forward off the wagon and was strangled as well as shot.  No reason can be assigned for his rash acts except that of temporary insanity caused by a recent illness.  He leaves another daughter, Mrs. W. S. Osborn of Hector.  His wife is a sister of T. C. Cole of this village.  Mr. Cogswell was about sixty years of age and his daughter thirty.  (Elmira Daily Gazette & Free Press, Page 7, Sat. Eve., 4 March 1893)

Hornellsville Weekly Tribune - March 24, 1893
Gould Cogswell, a wealthy farmer living near Havana, N.Y., shot and instantly killed his invalid daughter, and immediately afterward hung himself to a rafter in his barn.  When found life was extinct.  Loss of money is supposed to have unbalanced his mind.

Internment at Millport Today
The Deceased at one time was one of the Most Influential Men in the County
Ex Sheriff of Chemung Co Edwin W Howell died on the evening of the fourth of July at the home of his son, Frank S Howell at Lake View, NJ where he had resided for several years.  He was 73 yrs of age and had been in ill health for many months. About a year ago his wife died.
It was only a few yrs ago that Edwin Howell was one of the best known men in this vicinity.  He was active in advancing all that aided in the progress of Elmira.  He was born on a farm near Millport in 1823 and spend his early manhood in agriculture.  He was a student of politics and all of his life was an ardent Republican.  However, he was liberal in his views and he had many friends among those who did not believe exactly as he did.  He represented his native town in office and he was still a young man when his reputation for fairness was known throughout the country.  In the fall of 1863 he was nominated for sheriff by the Republicans and he was elected succeeding Sheriff William Halliday.
While occupying the chief executive office of the county he devoted his best efforts to the interests of the people.  He officiated at the first execution in this county where the gallows were used.  The Indians, who inhabited this valley previous to 1779 sentenced one of thier chiefs to death about 1730.  The chief was placed on a stump and his head was cut off and afterwards was stuck on a stake.  There is no record of any other execution here until Sheriff Howell's time.  In 1865 Henry Gardner who belong to the Twelveth United States infantry killed a man named Amose Mullock.  Gardner was tried here and in March of the year following the crime he was hung in the jail yard.  Sheriff Howell cutting the rope.
At the expiration of his term as sheriff he took up his residence on a large tract of farming land on the plank road between Bulkhead and Pine City.  After a few years he moved his family to Wellsburg where he opened a blacksmith shop.  He had learned the trade when a young man.  Six or seven years ago he was sick with la grippe.  This brought on consumption of the larnyx and he then retired from business taking up his residence with his son in this city.  About four years ago his son moved to Paterson, NJ where Mrs Howell, the ex-sheriff's wife died.  Only recently the family went to Lake View,NY.  For fourteen years his son Frank S Howell had been employed by the Erie railroad company in the baggage department.  Besides his son, Edwin Howell is survived by two sisters(Clara and Clarinda) who reside at the old homestead near Millport. The remains arrived in this city this morning and were taken to Millport where services were held this afternoon.

SMITH - Mrs. Mary A. Banks, widow of the late Hezekiah Banks, died at her home in Veteran Wednesday morning, age 90 years and 6 months.  For over 70 years she resided in the family home and most of the time enjoyed very good health.  The past five weeks, owing to the decline of old age, she failed very rapidly until the end came.  She passed out in the beyond as one going to sleep - so quietly and without a warning to the watchers she was gone - just sleeping.  She was a model woman in her home, always looking to the good of her household and always found there caring for her family.  She is survived by three sons, Milton Banks of Horseheads, Hiram Banks of Cortland, and Edwin Banks with whom she was living.  She was the daughter of Abram Smith and when very young her home was in Reading, N. Y.  She was the last survivor of her family of six children, three boys and three girls, all having preceded her long ago.  She will be missed most by a grandson in her home (son of Edwin Banks) who was most happy when in her company, and missed by all the visitors of that home who have passed so many pleasant hours listening to the ways of long ago.  The funeral will be held at the home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Burial in Millport.  Van Buskirk Bros. have charge.  (Chemung Valley Reporter, Page 8, Thursday, 1 September 1910)
