Joyce's Search Tip - January 2008

Description: Description: Description: Description: C:\TC\~srgp\new\bluehunt.jpg

Do You Knowthat you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.

You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.

Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

ZIMMERMAN   Ivan Age 21 of San Francisco, CA died on December 3, 2005 at San Francisco State University in San Francisco, CA from a fall. He was born on October 26, 1984 at the Kaiser-Permanente Hospital in Redwood City, CA the son of Mary and Harold Zimmerman. Ivan grew up in Pleasanton, CA attending Fairlands Elementary, Harvest Park Middle, and Amador High School where he graduated in 2002. He entered college in the autumn of that year. He moved to an apartment on Vidal Drive near the SFSU campus where he started school, majoring in Business Applications of Information Technology. Recently he transferred to the City College of San Francisco and was matriculated there at the time of his death. Ivan was athletically inclined. He wrestled during his second year of middle school and played five seasons of Little League Baseball. While at University he took up serious running and could be seen daily on the trails around Lake Merced. He maintained a health-club membership and used it regularly. During vacations in New York he greatly enjoyed the time he spent skiing at Bristol Mountain and waterskiing on Canandaigua Lake. He also developed a love of popular literature. Starting with the Goosebumps series of books in fourth grade, he soon moved on to C.S. Forester's historical fiction specifically those stories involving Horatio Hornblower. His subsequent brief interest in science fiction abruptly shifted to the thrillers of Tom Clancy and Clive Cussler. In recent months he was reading Lawrence Block's mystery novels. Ivan's mother taught his chess when he was in grammar school, but he didn't start playing seriously until late 2003. By this summer his numerical ranking was consistently above 1100 and his parents were trying to learn from him. Ivan was devoted to family and friends. Along with other grandchildren he spoke at his grandfather John Prislopski's funeral. When his best friend from high school moved to Florida, Ivan continued to stay in touch with him. He often played the role of system administrator for his mother, restoring functionality on her computer when all seemed lost. When his father fell ill this past summer Ivan made a special effort to get home each weekend to help out. He had a fine Thanksgiving and was looking forward to Chrismas, having asked Santa for a digital camera and any recent work by Lawrence Block. He had already bought gifts for friends; these will be given to them at the Wednesday visitation. Maple Grove Cemetery overlooks the high school from which his mother graduated and where his grandmother taught for many years. It is the resting place of many of Ivan's relatives. He will lie near his grandfather. Ivan wasn't given time to leave his mark on his profession but he filled the memories and hearts of his family with purest light. He was a wonderful son, a natural gentleman, and a true friend. We mourn his death. We miss him terribly now and always. Viewing will be held at Callaghan's Funeral Home 3833 East Avenue 3-5PM on Wednesday December 7, 2005 in San Francisco, CA. Buffet reception at Pasta Tratorria 4040 East Avenue 5:15-7 PM. She is survived by her daughter, Emily Shrut of Charleston; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Bertha was born in Ceudoux, Sascatchewan, Canada. Her parents had emigrated from Poland to Homestead 600 acres. She and her eight siblings were raised in a sod house and had many memories of the area and the icy cold terrain. In 1920 the family arrived in the United States, having grown tired of the bitter winters. Bertha met and married Anthony Romat and raised two children, Anthony Jr., who is deceased, and Emily. Bertha became a practical nurse of which she was very proud. Later she became interested in retail and managed several departments and a store. Flowers and gardening were her favorite pastimes, as was crocheting and ceramics. The body has been cremated, as was her wishes, and a memorial service will be held in the springtime, prior to joining her husband's gravesite in the Maple Grove Cemetery. In her behalf, a random act of kindness is suggested. Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home has been entrusted to handle the arrangements.  Star Gazette - November 27, 2012
