Earl Lavern Bates
He was the only child of George Lavern Bates of Steuben County and Adelaide
Knox of Elmira. He was born in Addison, Steuben County in 1895.
The family resided, briefly, in Steuben, Bradford but lived most of the
time in Elmira, Chemung.
Earl served in the US Navy from 1917 to 1922. He served
on the US Ohio at the end of his Navel career. He married Mary Thompson
Gaul of Philadelphia in 1922. They met when he was stationed in Philadelphia.
They had one daughter, Georgia Ella Bates who was born in 1923.
Earl died on January 31, 1949 in Southport and is buried with his parents
in Woodlawn Cemetery.
