Cornelius Sullivan (1830-1905), an Irish immigrant bom on Valentia
Island, County Kerry came to the United States in September 1848, and later
built the DL & W Hotel about 1886. Elmira had become a rail road hub
and increased rail traffic created a demand for small hotels The hotel
was located at 851 Dickinson Street across from the D L & W Railroad
Station. Cornelius was married to Elizabeth McDonnell (1834-1895) who was
born in Derrymore township Dingle Peninsula County Kerry Ireland and came
to the United States with her parents in 1847 at age 13. The Sullivans
resided in Burlington, Pa prior to moving to Elmira. |
