BIRGE Mary H.

A graveside service for Mary H. Birge of Burdett, who died March 29 at the age of 100 1/2, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7 at Hector Presbyterian Cemetery, 5516 Rte. 414, Hector. A memorial service has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, April 9 at the Burdett United Methodist Church, 4011 Lake Road, Burdett. Mary, born August 5, 1911, celebrated her 100th birthday last August at a party in her honor at the Silver Spoon Cafe in the Schuyler County Human Services Complex, Montour Falls.  Her only relatives are nieces and nephews who live in Colorado. One of them, Jackie Slater, says she and her husband plan to attend the memorial service and "attend to Mary's affairs."  Mrs. Slater, in an email, said this: "Since Mary was over one hundred years of age, she never used a computer. Having out-lived many friends and family, she acquired younger and younger friends who certainly do use computers! My brothers and I are the only direct relatives she had. We are Mary's sister's children and all of us live in Colorado.  "Mary spent her early years enjoying farm life north of Burdett with her mother, Lillian Birge, her father, Benjamin Birge, and her younger sister Grace. She attended Watkins Glen High School and went to teaching college and on to nursing school. She had a long career at the Veteran's Hospital in Canandaigua, working with the psychiatric patients, until her retirement in the 1960s.  "In her spare time, Mary loved gardening and cooking. She loved her church and her friends. She delighted in reading her family history and always kept track of current events. Mary also enjoyed hearing about the generations that have followed: her two nephews and one niece; three grand-nephews and four grand-nieces, and five great-grand nephews and three great-grand nieces! (And two more babies are on the way at the end of this year.)  "Mary visited Colorado when we were children and delighted in the airline travel, the Rocky Mountains and teaching me how to tie my shoes! She was a great lady and quite a character.  "It doesn't seem possible she has passed. I loved her wonderful way of taking life on her own terms. She enjoyed every day God gave her. And He gave her many days!"   At her 100th birthday celebration, Mary said she had never married, had never had any children. "Oh, I've been in love," she said, "but the gentlemen who proposed to me, I didn't love. I couldn't see living with them, being their wife. But it's all worked out pretty well."  She said she had "no arthritis, no diabetes, and I have a good appetite. Food tastes good to me. I'm able to use my legs, although I did have a hip replacement and I use a walker."  She would, she said, "like to go another 10 or 20 years. It's not unheard of. But it's not in my hands; it's up to God."   Funeral home obituary - April 6, 2012

Jane Carey Devoted Her Life to Area Children —BY DAVID KEELER—

State Representative Tina Pickett, right, presents Jane Carey with a commendation from the PA House of Representatives honoring her 100th birthday. Also pictured are Jane’s sons, Jim, left, and Tony. Former Camptown resident and well-known retired teacher Jane Carey celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, Oct. 5 with a gathering of family and friends at the Bradford County Manor, her current home.  Those attending included her sons, Jim and Tony, Tony’s wife, Rita, Jim’s girlfriend from Tennessee, Jane’s longtime friend, Mary Jane Tompkins, State Representative Tina Pickett and others. “It was a wonderful day for Jane,” Mary Jane Tompkins said. “She was smiling and looked beautiful.” Jane received many beautiful cards honoring her milestone birthday. “She received piles of cards,” Mary Jane added. Others attending the celebration included former Wyalusing resident Betty Bodnar, Judy Chamberlin and Jane’s nephew, Hurst Mitten and his wife, Maribel. Jane was born on Oct. 5, 1913 in Camptown, the daughter of Water Street residents Herbert and Elizabeth Hurst Landon. She lived on Water Street most of her life. In addition to her two sons, Jane has four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She started teaching in 1933 in Herrickville’s one-room school, later moved to the Stevensville school and then to the Camptown school. After taking a break from teaching to marry Wyalusing resident Bob Carey in 1942 and have their two sons, she later resumed her teaching career which would span a total of 38 years. Jane and Bob enjoyed a marriage of 55 years. He passed away in 1997. After she retired from teaching, Jane served on the Wyalusing Area School Board for a number of years. In a 2003 article covering Jane’s 90th birthday, Wes Skillings, who was Rocket- Courier editor at the time and a former fourth grade student of Jane’s, noted that she didn’t like talking about her birthday or telling people her age. “For those of us who have had the pleasure of knowing Jane over the years, kidding her about her age was a sure-fire way to get her hackles up,” Skillings wrote. “Her former boss, the late Max Gannon, used to get her going when he would introduce her at public functions as ‘my old first grade teacher’ when, in actuality, they were of comparable age. “She also gave me that look she used to give her old school superintendent when I pointed out that she had outlived the venerable truss bridge just across the street from her house that came tumbling down last month. The bridge was reportedly about 80 years old, so the question seemed legitimate. “Do you remember when they built that bridge?” I asked. “You must have been about 10 years old.” “If I did,” she responded, “I wouldn’t tell you.” Representative Pickett presented Janie, as she is known by her friends, with a certificate from the PA House of Representatives Saturday, which stated in part: “The House of Representatives of the Commonwealth pays tribute to Jane Carey upon the joyous occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and notes with appreciation that she has generously contributed to the well-being of others. Former Teachers Celebrate 100th Birthdays —BY DAVID KEELER—

Photo by David Keeler Alice Lyon, center, is pictured during her 100th birthday celebration on Saturday, Oct. 5 with State Representative Tina Pickett, left, and Bradford County Commissioner Daryl Miller, right, who honored Alice on her milestone birthday. Photo by David KeelerWhen State Representative Tina Pickett presented Alice Lyon with a commendation from the PA House of Representatives Saturday honoring her 100th birthday, Pickett said, “It’s customary to include a key to the city on such occasions. But you don’t need a key, your connection to this community goes back generations. Your family is part of Wyalusing’s rich history.” Pickett was referring to Alice’s deep roots in Wyalusing; she was celebrating her 100th birthday in the Wyalusing Hotel, which was built by her grandfather, J. Morgan Brown. Her father, local machinist, businessman and inventor, Will Lee, was one of the founders of Wyalusing’s Peoples State Bank (now PS Bank). And the house she grew up in, which was also built by J. Morgan Brown, is now home to current Wyalusing Hotel owner Chris Woodruff and his family. Alice marked her 100th birthday (the actual day was Friday, Oct. 4) with a gathering of some 16 family members and friends in the hotel dining room, where on the wall behind Alice hung a painting completed by her late sister, Nancy McCann. Now a resident of Ithaca, NY, Alice lives in the three-story home where she and her late husband of nearly 70 years, Wayne S. Lyon, a former Spring Hill resident, raised their four kids. Alice and Wayne, who was born at what is now the Latini Farm on Spring Hill, were high school sweethearts, and both graduated from Wyalusing High School before attending college. Alice earned a teaching degree from West Chester State Teachers College, and she served as a teacher for many years. Wayne was employed by New York State Electric and Gas in Ithaca. One of the favorite family stories told during Saturday’s gathering focused on the time when President William Howard Taft visited Wyalusing just months prior to becoming a U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Alice got to sit on Taft’s lap while he traveled through Wyalusing in a fancy Cadillac. An imposing figure, who weighed over 350 pounds earning him the moniker “Big Lub,” Taft left a lasting impression with Alice, who was a young girl at the time. “He was the largest man I had ever seen,” she said Saturday. Alice also shared other memories of early Wyalusing including when Hazel Keeler played the piano to accompany the silent movies at Wyalusing’s movie theater. “I remember when the Wyalusing Rocket was the second best weekly newspaper in the whole country,” she said .Along with the commendation presented by Rep. Pickett, Alice was also honored by Bradford County Commissioner Daryl Miller who presented a certificate on behalf of Bradford County. A letter of congratulations from President Barack Obama was also read. Along with her four children, Alice has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Alice is the last surviving member of her family that included her previously mentioned sister, Nancy McCann, Helen Bonnell of Wyalusing and her brother John K. Lee, 97, who died on Aug. 22 of this year. Alice attended a memorial service for her brother at Wyalusing’s Presbyterian Church on October 7, two days after her 100th birthday celebration. Alice’s son, Eric, who also lives in Ithaca and attended Saturday’s celebration, said Alice continues to enjoy her life and loves playing cards and playing the piano. When it comes to what’s attributed to her long life, Alice offered a big smile and said quickly, “I have a shot of scotch every evening.” Along with her son, Eric, other children who attended Saturday’s celebration included Alice’s son, Mark of Munson, MA and daughter, Diane Lyon of Edmonton, Canada.
