Note from our users : For those who would like to learn more about the Rockwells buried in this cemetery, they can turn to page 43 of "Personal Glimpses" section of Towner's "History of Chemung County, New York". I think the "Personal Glimpses" section is a genealogy goldmine, worthy of the $19.95 price asked by the historical society.

"William Rockwell was born September 16, 1781 in Orange Co., NY. At age ten, he moved to Sing Sing in the town of Big Flats. He married Ann Kelsey on Nov. 8, 1801. She died Dec. 19, 1806, leaving one daughter Anna who married as Mr. Schofield and moved to Ohio. The second wife of William Rockwell was Nancy Bennitt, a sister of John and Comfort Bennitt, whom he married Feb. 15, 1807. She was born Aug. 26, 1791. In 1822, he purchased the farm where he resided until his death May 24, 1863."

More data about his parentage and his descendants is provided on the page for those interested. Buy the book! Support the Chemung Co. Historical Society!!
