The Hicks Cemetery is located in the eastern part of the town of Baldwin, Chemung County, NY, on the West side of the Wynkoop Creek Road (County Highway #3). It is 1/10th of a mile north of the line separating the towns of Baldwin and Chemung. There May be as many as 30 or 40 unmarked and "lost" graves with some possibly dating back 150 years. All headstones were copied by Doris and Joseph Boyd on Sept. 25, 1976. Burial records were found that have no tombstones marking the graves.

I have just visited some of your sites. You are doing an excellent job.

I thought that I had observed a link to make additions or corrections but can not find it now. I am a descendant of Rev. Earl Rumsey of the Simon line. An entry for Josiah V. Rumsey, buried in the Westbrook Cemetery, Van Etten, Chemung, is in error. He is the son of George W. & Rachel Ann Steenburgh. Dates for Emma Rumsey Swartout in the Hicks Cemetery, Baldwin, Chemung are 16 May 1862-Nov 1884, two years after her marriage.

I correspond with Jean Rumsey quite often. I called her earlier this week and she is fairing quite well. Her 90th birthday is 24 May 2002.

I wonder if you'd like to add the obituary for Marguerite Vargo
Montgomery which I will add to the end of this email. She's buried in
Hicks Cemetery in Chemung County. She was a friend of my parents.

Also I wonder if the Nicholas and Esther Varga listed in the cemetery
transcription might actually be VargO, because in Marguerite's obit it
says she was the daughter of late Nicholas and Esther (Orsurvath)
Vargo. For what it's worth, the family is Vargo in the 1930 census,
too.

I love your huge site. I think you have the most useful data of all the Rootsweb sites!
