ALLEN - Mrs. Martha Allen Stevens of Millport, died Sunday at Akron, O., aged seventy-six years. Mrs. Stevens is survived by her husband Frederick Stevens, a sister in Loveland, Colorado; a brother Alfred Allen of Elmira; two nieces, Mrs. Edna Dill of Calif., and Mrs. Mabel Fassett of Washington, D.C., four nephews: The Rev. Willis Stackhouse of Rochester, Floyd Allen of Buffalo; LeVern Allen of Ithaca and William Allen of Corning. The remains were removed to Millport, where the funeral was held in the Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. Stocum officiated and burial was in the Vary cemetery on the Ridge road. A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of Mrs. J. J. Allen in Elmira
on West Gray street, Dec. 28, at 10 o’clock, when Miss Martha A. Allen of Veteran,
became the bride of Alfred F. Stevens of Schenectady. The ceremony was
performed by the Rev. Willis Stackhouse of Pennsylvania, nephew of the bride.
The bride wore a handsome suit of blue broadcloth and hat to match. After a
wedding dinner the bridal couple left for an extended wedding trip to Albany,
Watertown and other places of interest. The best wishes of a host of friends go
with them.

Mr. Ernest Benjamin age 93 of the Ridge Rd., Horseheads, Wednesday, December 3,
1980 at the Arnot Ogden Hospital.
Friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, Horseheads Friday from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held there Saturday at 2 p.m.,
the Rev. Alex Nemeth will officiate. Interment Vary Cemetery, Town of Veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leah Benjamin, son and daughter in law Stanley
and Helen Benjamin of Horseheads; stepsons and daughter in law, Frank and
Florence Hamilton, Clifford and Virginia Hamilton, all of Elmira, James and
Ruth Hamilton of Wayne, N.Y.; stepdaughter, Mrs. Mildred McConnell of Barton;
sisters, Mrs. Stella Ennis and Mrs. Pearl Murphy both of Elmira, 12
grandchildren; several great grandchildren. Mr. Benjamin was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Horseheads. He was a retired farmer and a lifelong
resident of Chemung County. He was a member of the Veteran Grange, was a member
and former master of the Pomona Grange. He was also a member of the State
and National Granges. He was a past director of the Soil and Water
Conservation District Board, a member of the Chemung County Farm Bureau.
Thomas J. CARPENTER died at his home in the Town of Veteran, yesterday noon, age sixty-two years. He is survived by his wife and five children Mrs. Mary A. McDougall and Charles W. Carpenter, of Veteran, Mrs. Helen Tharheimer of Syracuse, Thomas J. Carpenter, of Sullivanville, Frank H. Carpenter, of Auburn, two brothers, J. L. Carpenter, of Elmira, George W. Turner, of Sullivanville, and two sisters, Mrs. Abbie Nichols and Mrs. Katherine Miller, of Horseheads. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the late home. The Rev. W. H. DEATH – JOHN COGSDILL, JR. - Feb. 2, 1916
John Cogsdill, Jr., died Monday morning at 5 o’clock at the family home in
Veteran, aged eighteen years. He is survived by his parents, Mr. And Mrs. John
Cogsdill, two brothers, Clair L. Of Austin, Pa., and Lewis at home; also three
sisters, Mrs. Archie Lovell, of Catherine, and the Misses Millie and Agnes, at
home. The funeral was held at the home Thursday at 1 p.m., and burial was in
the Vary cemetery on the Ridge road.
CORNISH - Obituary MAC DOUGALL, (CORNISH) EMILY
The funeral services of Mrs. Theo. McDougal were held Friday morning at
11 o’clock, at her late home in Veteran. The Rev. Wm. H. Yard of Horseheads,
officiated, and interment was made in the Vary cemetery. Mrs. McDougal’s maiden
name was Emily Cornish. She was born in Tompkins county, August 21, 1849, and
is survived by her husband and two sisters, Mrs. John L. Carpenter of
Elmira and Mrs. Judson Primmer of Kenzual, Pa. Since her marriage she has
always lived in Veteran, and her death removes from that place a respected
resident from the church, a faithful sister from the home a beloved wife. The
??? and tribulation which prevented this faithful woman from performing her household
duties, cut her off from social life and from the ?? of the served, only made
her faith in him stronger. When her spirit answered the summons to return to
Him who gave it she surrendered to her Maker, saying, “Not my will but Thine be
done”, and in departing left an example of true Christian living whose sweet
and ennobling influence will ever dwell in the hearts and appear in the lives
of those she knew best. The bereaved husband and family wish to thank the many
kind friends who administered to her in her sickness and them in their
bereavement.

CRANE –MRS. PHOEBE (CRANE) DANN age 83 of Big Flats, NY, unexpectedly, Tuesday May 19, 1987. Friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main St., Horseheads, Thursday, 7 to 9 pm, Friday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 pm. Funeral services will be held there Friday evening at the conclusion of calling hours (8:30 pm). The Rev. William P. Walker will officiate. Committal services will be conducted on Saturday morning in Vary Cemetery, Town of Veteran, NY. Mrs. Dann was predeceased by her first husband, Stanley R. Dann in August of 1944 and by her second husband, Laurance M. Dann in July of 1978. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and John Wiseman of Coca Ratan, FL, Barbara and Glen Horton of Elmira; sons and daughters-in-law, James and Samantha of Wilmington, NC, Paul and Venita of Collegeville, PA, Delos and Alice of Palmerston, Ontario, Canada, Ralph and Mary of Ellensburg, WA; 26 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Harriett Playfoot of Horseheads; aunt, Miss Mary Louise Stoll of Horseheads; several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by her only brother, George Crane and 3 grandchildren. Mrs. Dann was a member of the Mosherville Bible Church. She was a graduate of Geneseo Normal School, she was a member of the Auxiliary of the Arnot-Ogden Memorial Hospital. ROBERTS, MRS. J. C. - OBITUARY
Mrs. J. C. Roberts died at the family home in the town of Veteran yesterday
afternoon at 3:30 o’clock, aged seventy-six years. Mrs. Roberts was one of the
first students in Elmira College over a half century ago. Her grandfather was a
soldier of the War of the Revolution and her father was a veteran of the War of
1812. Mrs. Roberts is survived by a daughter Mrs. Alvin Green of Veteran, two
brothrs, Marcus of Oakland, Cal., and Joseph of Fort Worth, Kansas; two
sisters, Mrs. Adelia Catlin of Dolgeville, and Mrs. Francis Filkins of Corning.
The funeral will be held at the family home in the town of Veteran, Monday
afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial will be made in the Vary cemetery in the town of

DAYTON Lucille D. Turner
91, of Horseheads, NY, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 24, 2012, while residing at Maplewood Manor Nursing Home in Ballston Spa, NY. She was the wife of the late Robert S. Turner who died in 1981. She is survived by her children, Barbara and her husband Steve Noll of Libertytown, MD and Beth and her husband Daniel Loewenstein of Ballston Spa, NY; along with four grandchildren, Lauren Noll, Erik Noll, Jason Loewenstein and Tyler Loewenstein. She is also preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Loewenstein. Raised on her family farm in Stamford, NY, Lucille attended Mt. Jefferson School, a one room school for elementary education. She graduated in 1939 from Stamford Central School and then went on to the Albany Stenotype School. WWII intervened and she moved to Elmira in 1942 to help her sister Connie raise her young son while her husband was in service. During this time, she was employed at Swift Lubrication Co., Elmira and Trayer Products in Elmira Heights. Lucille met Robert in Elmira and married in October of 1948 at the Stamford Presbyterian Church. They built their home in Horseheads on Pleasant View Farms where Lucille handled the farm's bookkeeping. Lucille was a faithful member of Horseheads First Presbyterian Church for 64 years - under 14 pastors - and very active in the community. Following her husband's death, she took over his position of secretary/manager of the Chemung County Fair from 1982-86, a position he had held for thirty-five years. Lucille was the first woman accepted into the local Kiwanis Club, active in the Horseheads Woman's Club, Garden Club, Chemung Valley Farmer's Museum, Veteran Grange, RSVP and other community organizations. Visitation will be held at Barber's Funeral Home in Horseheads on Thursday, June 28, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 29, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Horseheads. Interment will be private. Mrs. Nathan Vary died at her home in the town of Veteran at 12:30 o’clock this
morning, aged seventy-three years. She is survived by her husband and one son
Charles E. Vary of Newark, N.Y., and six grandchildren, Mrs. Harry O. Ayres of
Ulster, Pa., Nathan H. Vary of New Kensington, Pa., Henry H. Vary, Emmaline,
Kathryn and Dorothy of Newark. Mrs. Vary had been a member of the Baptist
Church of Veteran for forty-seven years and was an earnest and faithful church
worker with many friends. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the
home at 3 o’clock, the Rev. T. A. Stevens officiating. Interment will be in the
Vary Cemetery. [Her birth name was Catherine S. Fellows, b. 08/05/1834, d.
10/22/1907. She was my great-great-grandmother. Her headstone is in
the Vary Cemetery, although it has become a bit hard to read. Not to
nitpick, but for the sake of accuracy, her granddaughter’s name was spelled

GOSS –DONNA M. GOSS OLIN DANN. Long-time Breesport Road resident, age 86, of Horseheads, on Sunday, May 28, 2000. Donna was born February 6, 1914 in Big Flats, NY, the daughter of the late Banks A. and Eva Groome Goss. She was predeceased by husbands, Gerald C. Dann in 1990 and Ralph B. Olin in 1969 and a sister, Emily Goss Lescovec in 1989. She was by step-daughters, Gretchen (Terry) Deglau of Fairport, NY and Sally (Ted) Seyfarth of Barrington, IL; step-sons, Philip (Phyllis) Dann of Pennfield, NY, Frank Dann of Fresno, CA, Fredric (Susan) Dann of Edmonds, WA and Alan (Florence Vanderwalt) Dann of Cambridge, WI; step daughter-in-law, Valerie Dann of Fresno, CA; brother-in-law, Fred Lescovec of Big Flats, NY; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and many close and caring friends. A long time Breesport Rd. resident, she was for many years the Proprietor for Maple Hurst Park. Mrs. Dann taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Horseheads Business & Professional Women’s Association and was a member of the O.E.S. Excelior Chapter #232 in Big Flats for over 50 years. As a member there, she was also past Matron in 1954 and District Deputy in 1959. Mrs. Dann spent many years of her life caring for others. She had many close and caring friends and appreciated the care, acts of good deeds and friendship that was given to her. She was a woman that will be remembered for her kindness to others. Age 94 of Horseheads, NY died on Monday January 24, 2011. Helen was born August 3, 1916 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late John and Katherine Malone Lentz. She was also pre-deceased by her brothers Ed Lentz and Jack Lentz. Helen married her husband, R. Stanley Benjamin, on December 28, 1940. Stan and Helen devoted their lives to running a Dairy Farm on Ridge Road and raising their children. They were long-time members of The Veteran Grange and The Farm Bureau. Stan was involved in Town and County Government serving in numerous positions and was The Chemung County Executive from January 1, 1979 until December 31, 1982. Stan pre-deceased Helen on January 26, 2000 after 59 years of marriage. She loved her family and friends and treasured the time she spent with them. Mrs. Benjamin is survived by her loving children Jack & Sue Benjamin of Horseheads, NY, Patricia & John Kristofik of Morris, NY, Ralph Stanley "Butch" & Myra Benjamin of Manitou Springs, Colorado, and Alan & Jacqueline Benjamin of Northport, Florida; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends. It was Mrs. Benjamin's wish that there be no calling hours. HENRY M. PLANTS of East Center Street died at 11 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 22, 1918) aged seventy-two years. The funeral will be held at the home of E. H. Benson, 333 East Center Street Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Plants served through the Civil War and belonged to the Engineers’ Corps. Company G. 150th Engineers. He was born in Veteran and was a prosperous farmer. He retired five years ago and came to live with his nephew, E. H. Benson of Elmira. The Rev. O. H. Denny of St. Luke’s Congregational Church will officiate at the service and burial will be in the Vary Cemetery, near Horseheads. at 8 o’clock yesterday morning. She is survived by three sons, J.M.,

TURNER, HARRIET ELSIE – OBITUARY (Handwritten date Feb. 16, 1934)
Harriet Elsie Turner, fourteen year old daughter of Benjamin and Edna Spaulding
Turner, took her departure from this life at her home in the Town of Veteran,
last Friday morning. She was laid away in the little hilltop cemetery in
Veteran, on Monday afternoon while a grief stricken family, sorrowing
neighbors, and upwards of a hundred Horseheads schoolmates with their teachers,
eyes dimmed with tears, said farewell.Elsie was born in Veteran township on
March 24, 1919. Beloved by all who met her, she smiled her way with commendable
achievement through seven and a half years of elementary work in the little white
schoolhouse not far from her home, entering Horseheads Junior high school in
January 1931, at eleven years of age. There she made a host of friends and
participated in a number of school activities. She was president of the
Sophomore class in 1932-33 and a member of the Student Council, as well as the
Girls Glee Club. She was the youngest member of the Junior class. To Elsie, her
school was indeed her life.The out of school contacts which Elsie made were
also rich in happy experiences and honors for her. Last Friday afternoon four
hundred twenty-five Horseheads High School students stood silently with heads
bowed in general assembly, as they paid tribute to Elsie and the beneficient
influence which was her portion. Elsie has gone—The blessing of a wholesome,
sweet, happy life she leaves behind her. She lived life well and to its
fullest. And we are the better for it.
TURNER, ELSIE
Elsie Turner, 14, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Turner, of the Ridge Road,
Town of Veteran, died Friday morning as the result of an attack of quinsy. She
is survived by the parents; two brothers, George E. and Benjamin, Jr.; a
sister, Shirley Ann all at home; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George
Spaulding of Trumansburg, Mrs. Celia E. Turner of Horseheads. The funeral was held
Monday. The Rev. Fenimore E. Cooper officiated. Burial in the Vary Cemetery,

Chemung County Fair Association since 1946; he was a partner in Pleasant View
Farms; he had served as secretary, vice-president and president of the New York
State Association of Agricultural Fairs; he was a director of the Chemung Canal
Trust Company; he was a member of the Farm Bureau; a member and past master of
the Veteran Grange; he was also a member of the Pomona and State Granges. He
was also a member of the Horseheads Lodge 364 F & AM and the Elmira Kiwanis
Club. He had served on the Chemung County Board of Supervisors and the Board of
