Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.

Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. WELLS Dorothea E. Irvine

98, passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on January 9, 2012, at her home in Lockwood, N.Y., with her beloved daughter by her side.  Born on June 9, 1913, in Fort Plain, N.Y., Dorothea enjoyed a long and full life as she lived to serve her beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, whose free gift of salvation she personally accepted as a young teenager. Her life was greatly impacted by her first pastor, the Rev. C.J. Mason, at Colonie Alliance Church, in Colonie, N.Y.  Dorothea began preparation for her life of service to the Lord at the Albany Bible School, then attended the Missionary Training Insatiate, now Nyack College, in Nyack, N.Y., where she graduated in 1938. While there, she was attracted to a fellow student, whose prayers captured her attention. She and David M. Irvine were married on June 3, 1939.  David and Dorothea spent the next several decades faithfully serving the Lord together in full-time Christian ministry. Following home missionary service in Prestonsburg, K.Y., the Rev. Irvine went on to pastor Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) churches in Danville, Ind., Wardensville, W.V., (at Faith Mission Church, a C&MA affiliated church), Harrison, Ohio, Wheeling, W.V., and Oneida, N.Y. Following a semi-retirement in 1977 to Lockwood, N.Y., the Rev. Irvine also briefly served as pastor of Halsey Valley United Methodist Church. Dorothea and her husband enjoyed 45 years of marriage together before the Rev. Irvine died in August, 1984.  Dorothea was a founding member of Chemung Christian Fellowship in Chemung, N.Y., and was previously an active member of North Waverly Chapel and Athens Wesleyan Church. As a member of the North Waverly Chapel, Dorothea taught Children’s Church, ran the Bible Memory Program, and also served as Chairwoman of the Missionary Committee.  Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents, Charles J. and Emma E. Wells; her beloved husband, the Rev. David M. Irvine; her twin sister, Marion G. Wells; sisters, Elizabeth (Robert) Rapp and Jane (Dr. Wade) Coggins; and two sons, infant twin son, Richard Charles in 1943 and her 16-year-old son, John Everett in 1961.  Dorothea is survived by her brother, the Rev. William (Eleanor) Wells of Waverly, N.Y.; son, David (Carol) Irvine of Winchester, Va., and her daughters, Betty (Carl) Salo of Lockwood, N.Y., and Barbara (Nick) Nichols of Penang, Malaysia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, David (Dr. Lisa) Irvine, Melinda (David) Williamson, Dr. Karen (Dr. Bobby) Meador, Laurie (Jason) Spivey, Bob Salo, Holly Nichols, Heather Nichols, Christian Nichols, and Brittany Nichols. Great-grandchildren are Samuel and Emily Irvine; Jordan, Brett, Luke, and Nathan Williamson; and Wyatt, Lydia and Lily Spivey.  Dorothea’s faithful commitment to prayer will be sorely missed. She daily prayed for her family, church, and missionaries around the world, and consistently wore out missionary prayers manuals. Her life Bible verse, Psalm 37:5, was more than just a verse — it was her life experience, for indeed, she committed her way to the Lord and delighted in trusting him. She was a Godly example to her children and they “arise and call her blessed” — Proverbs 31:28.  A service celebrating Dorothea’s life will be held at Chemung Christian Fellowship on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Randy Stilson officiating, assisted by Dorothea’s brother, the Rev. William C. Wells. Prior to the service, family and friends may call beginning at 1 p.m.  In lieu of flowers donations in Dorothea’s memory may be made to Chemung Christian Fellowship.  Caring assistance is being provided by Allen-Manzer Funeral Home, Spencer, N.Y.   Sayre Morning Times – January 11, 2012
