Clifford Elliott, born January 1900, probably in Tioga County, son
of Winifred Nevada Simpson and Otis Elliott. Died April 6,
1918, Camp Merritt, New Jersey. He was the first soldier to go from
Elmira, Chemung County, and the first to die from Elmira.
Winifred and Otis Elliott were living at 497 Erie St., Elmira, NY, when
Clifford, then a lad of 17, joined the State Guard. He liked soldiering
so well that, on reaching his 18th birthday he transferred into the regular
army and was about to go overseas when he became fatally ill of lobar pneumonia
while at Camp Merritt, N. J. He had been an employee of the Eclipse
plant in Elmira, NY.
